| Dell launches 3 linux systems |

Dell has unveiled three consumer systems -- the XPSTM 410n and DimensionTM E520n desktops and the InspironTM E1505n notebook -- with the Ubuntu 7.04 Linux distribution factory installed. It is also understood they are certifying select systems for running Red Hat and Novell's SUSE (presumably to keep Microsoft happy)!

According to DisplaySearch survey laptop notebook market share for Q4'06 was down for Apple, Dell, and Fujitsu/Fujitsu-Siemens. Sony, HP, Acer and Lenovo all easily surpassed the average Q/Q growth rate for the laptop notebook PC market. HP and Dell topped the laptop table of results.

Dell have launched their Latitude ATGTM D620 (All-Terrain Grade) Laptop. It includes a Shock mounted hard drive. Apparently the Notebook meets Military Specs for Vibration, Humidity and Altitude.

Dell has announced a global carbon-neutral initiative that plants trees for customers to offset the carbon impact of electricity required to power their computer systems. A customer donation of $2 for a notebook and $6 for a desktop will go toward the planting of trees.

Seagate has launched a new Savvio 15K HDD which spins at 15000 rpm meaning faster drive for data access useful for Servers and RAID systems. This is compared to Desktop hard drives which currently average 7500rpm or Laptop Notebook drives at 5400rpm or 4800rpm.

Following Apple's announcement for the new iPhone, there is great speculation over whose chip is used inside it. The smart money is on ARM whose history with Apple goes back to the Apple Newton, although this is contrary to Apple's main move to Intel x86 processors for its Mac-Book, Mac-Mini, iMac and Mac-Pro computers.

Toshiba is the pioneer of high capacity, small form factor HDD. The company's current 1.8-inch HDD, is used in palmtops, ultraportable notebook PCs, handheld GPS units, and digital audio players and jukeboxes.
With the new drive, only a quarter the size of a 1.8-inch drive, Toshiba achieves a hard drive with capacity to deliver enhanced data storage to smaller, lighter more efficient products.

The project to bring one laptop per child for $100 is expected to hit mass production during August/September. The project uses Linux Operating system for the laptop and are designated for third-world countries.

am absolutley delighted at receiving ALL of my data from my "dead" memory
stick. On Monday evening I was absolutley distraught at the thought of the
loss of hundreds of hours of preparation of lessons and work. I really

have as many disaster contingencies covered off as possible! Once again thanks for all your help. After various attempts to get the data back we had all but lost hope but you have shown that you should never say never!

The reality of my situation was pretty grim with having the drive "Crash" but also not being visible in the BIOS, as well as being the primary drive in a RAID-0 stripped array - I really thought my chips were up! I think my situation had to be one of the worst you could get, and I still have my data at the end of it.
All my data files have been recovered and precious irreplaceable files have also been recovered.
I just wanted to thank you for your help and because of the nature of my work I often get people asking me for PC advise - If anyone ever has a hard drive crash there is only one place I'll be sending them |
